Predators 2010
Yet another cash in on the original Some people with guns wake up in freefall and violent shenanigans ensue. The plot as pointless as a chocolate fireguard but there's enough shooting and violence to keep you amused. Certainly not one for the award season but if you can disengage your brain it's not a bad way to waste a couple of hours. 5/10 |

Me and Mrs Dym watched this a few weeks back (I have a huge list of reviews I need to do for the last month, but can't be bothered ) and were in the same position as you and Rob (book-reading-wise, of course. We weren't sitting in your flat, or anything!). I'd give it a 8/10 as I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite not having read the book, and Mrs Dym also thought it was great and she had read the book. I bet that at one point you and Rob, like me and Mrs Dym, were both going (or at least thinking) "Get up, Lindsey! Get UP!" Would definitely recommend it to others, especially those who enjoy the fantastical and wonderful cinematography/sets

Goodfellas - Bluray
Still awesome. Not as much picture improvement as I was expecting over the DVD. 8.5/10 Bubb Ho-tep - Bluray Utter sillyness in the extreme. Bruce Campbell is an elderly Elvis fighting a mummy. 8/10 Modern Times - Bluray One of Chaplin's more well known films, but not really one of my favourites. It's too much like a series of short films with a vague storyline throughout to hold them together. However, it does show Chaplin at pretty much his peak of physical abilities. It was originally intended to be the first of the talkies with the Tramp, but it was decided that the Tramp was much less appealing if he spoke, so there are lines, but spoken by more minor characters. I own the complete Chaplin collection on DVD, but the work they've done for the bluray is astonishing. The picture quality is astonishly good. The DTS-HD audio track matches thisl. The restoration work done has made it look and sound pretty much as new. Frankly amazing given that quite often silent movie prints were disposed of by heating/burning to get the silver nitrate out and those that survived were left to rot in vaults. 8.5/10 This week I shall be subjecting myself to movie tedium... I only have 15 or so films left in the IMDB top 250 - I shall try to do the Lord Of The Rings trilogy back to back to get the damn things out of the way. Then to wipe them from my mind - Star Wars. A proper trilogy. Episode IV - Revisited *Fan edit DVD by Adywan - essentially fixing loads of irritating things - like Han shooting first again!* and Episode V and VI in lovely 1080p AVCHD

I watched Modern Times the other day. Nowhere near as good as The Great Dictator or City Lights but still made me laugh out loud.

Das Boot is a longer film and it's all on one side.

The original DVD edition of Goodfellas was a flipper - instead of doing a dual layer disc they stuck it across multiple sides - also encoded poorly.
Next edition was the SE - no longer a flipper and also was encoded with a better bitrate and more importantly Anamorphic format. Included 2 commentaries and also had a second disc with extra guff on. Bluray is a HD version of the SE as far as I can tell. But I was expecting a much greater change.

The biggest I've watched it on is a 28" CRT so I haven't really noticed poor encoding. It's annoying having to turn it over though.

As soon as the SE came out I bought it. I was fed up of flipper discs. I do still have a few - but they tend to be dual layer flippers so 18gb discs.
