Burlesque!

If you're going to see it as a dance movie which is like an elongated pop video, total eyecandy and with some good songs you won't be disappointed. Just don't expect anything more and you'll be fine!

I laughed out loud a few times (there's a salute to Cabaret's Two Ladies) and was a nice little film which I will be buying, although I will be fast forwarding past Cher's 'I am a strong woman' solo which just seemed totally plonked in there for no reason, plus CA's solo - if I'd paid for a Burlesque show and CA had been on stage wailing about lurve in a green dress I'd have asked for my money back!

Fun escapism! 8/10(for the music and sparkliness mainly!)

Predators

Yet another film containing Predators where we learn nothing of who they really are, what their motives are beyond trying to become better killers, or what their back-story is.

A bunch of human 'predators' (various killers, either professional/military or criminal) are dumped on an alien planet (we never find out where, or why, or if this is the Predator home planet or what) and are basically hunted for training purposes.

As we have little sympathy for these completely unknown characters aside from empathising with their desire to not be there, and there's no development to look forward to with the overall story of the Predators, ultimately the film is pointless. Gone are the days where it was pretty much impossible to kill or hide from a Predator because they were so elusive and able to find their prey so easily, now it seems it's possible to crash around a forest firing relatively antiquated guns with little consequence and just dodge their laser-targeting shoulder cannons should you be attacked. Oh, and never mind that you've been dropped in the middle of nowhere with one gun, you'll not run out of ammo in a hurry, even if you're a Yakuza with a pistol.

Decent action, with a few nods to the original, but barely worth watching beyond that. Whoever decided that a decent scene in this movie would include a death-row prisoner with no apparent fighting skills jumping on the back of a Predator with a shiv whilst shouting "Die you space-faggot!!!" should be shot at with a laser-targeting shoulder cannon... avoiding it by jumping over a log.

Despicable Me

I thought this was brilliant, just the right mix of dark comedy with slapstick right from the getgo, I thought the only good thing was going to be the Minions but the main character is really endering and the whole thing isn't overplayed. Not hot, not cold, just right

The Sorcerers Apprentice

I didn't expect much from this and I wasn't disapointed although I wasn't as disapointed as I could have been. despite my better judgement I actually like the work of Nic Cage and he plays his part well. This is typical Disney fare and a bit formulaic but Alfred Molina does a good job and the effects are good without being overblown. It's a bit like the Lightning Thief but not so sucky.

6/10

The Social Network

SPOILERS

I've finally gotten round to seeing this but wasn't that enthusiastic about a film with Jesse Eisenberg or about Facebook. Zombieland and Adventure Land were good but I didn't quite fancy another piney performance from him. Fair play though, he's completely different in this and pulls off a great performance.

However being that Facebook is what it is and most of us like computers here, I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking he was asked to add quite a lot of stereotypical 'geek' into his performance and sometimes the portrayal of his character was pretty cringe-worthy. He was either socially awkward or not, but it was good enough such that the final line of the film was pretty apt: "You're not an asshole, Mark. You're just trying so hard to be."

Edit - both Winklevoss actors were played by one guy.

Into the Wild 2007

After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.

by far the best film I've seen this year and can't believe I haven;t seen it before. it is very emotional at the end. Just a brilliant film, perhaps helped by the fact that since I can remember I have always wanted to try surviving in such a way, wish I had the balls to do something similar.

Inglorious Bar-Stewards[sic]

Tarantino superbly conducts a combination of bloody and talky in this intentionally brash rewriting of history.

Charismatic and satirical, an emotional and exciting score; all splattered with the director's signature (just incase we missed it! )

8.5/10

Little Fockers

I've seen all of these & heard that this one was criticised for not having any new material, but that didn't bother me. This is a film you watch because its like the others and the running themes/jokes are what make it a good film.

If you liked the others, make sure you catch this one. Oh and its got Jessica Alba in her underwear

The Losers

Starring
  • Jeffrey Dean Morgan
  • Zoe Saldana
  • Chris Evans
  • Idris Elba
Comic book adaptation

6/10 It's not a great film by any stretch but it was perfect for a brainless recovery day watch. Lots of explosions and gunfights (although surprisingly few deaths) as The Losers seek their revenge - try not to think about it and you might enjoy it.
