They've actually made it illegal here. On my section of the E45 (from a town called Vejle to my city), trucks are only allowed to overtake special transports.
It works, but there are problems. If there is something slow blocking the trucks (normally an old lady or a viking warrior in an old VW), the road effectively becomes a single-lane road and you get stuck behind the slowest car, which is normally someone doing a little over the speed of the lorries. You just can't win.

This is entirely rational but it annoys me so I'll mention it here - lack of attention to detail.
Todays example is a so called data cabling company who managed to snap one of the fibre optic cores when changing a cabinet. Just what I want when we're due to move buildings tomorrow and there is now a fooked network connection. |

US Tax system. In theory it's fairly straight forward. In reality its a PITA.
One of the joys of living in the US is having to do annual tax returns. No PAYE tax here, you make voluntary witholdings (payments) throughout the year from your wages and then fill in a tax return before the end of March. We're being slightly stung for state taxes, owe about $400, but at the moment look to be getting close to $2k back from Federal taxes due to Kari's school expenses (there are tax credits to encourage further education) New joy this year, though, that I'm trying to figure out the impact of is that they take into account if you've got more than $11k in foreign banks, and tax you on interest and whatnot. Unfortunately I do have more than that (much more) which I've been holding on to in the UK due to the crappy exchange rate ($1.6) Really frigging complicated is trying to identify the highest value my accounts have been in the past year, in dollars. What, exactly, exchange rate am I supposed to use? Do I have to take every value and figure it out the exchange rate at that time. What about if the exchange rate was more favourable at another time... urgh. Nightmare. I'm mostly figuring on taking it as based on the exchange rate at the time of filing and leaving it there. Way too many hassles otherwise. On the other hand, as much as tax filing is a pain, there are advantages. As you're having to do tax returns anyway people are much more inclined to do things like invest in stocks and shares. No worrying about reaching any thresholds like you do in the UK. Tax credits works as a good way to encourage certain behaviour in people, too, especially as they're easy to claim for when you do your tax return. E.g. At one of the two properties my father-in-law owns he's got solar panels up on the roof (for all that he doesn't believe in global warming) as there are very nice tax credits that mean they paid for themselves within a couple of years. Would be awesome if they'd streamline the tax code though. In rather typical fashion of a bureaucracy it's an organically grown mess. Started straight forward, now got so many bolt ons and corrections that its a positive minefield to navigate.

My latest one is excessive and/or unnecessary make-up.
I was sitting opposite two young lasses on the Metro today (late teens-early twenties). They were both pretty girls (at my age, they all are ) but were both caked in make-up. In my opinion, make-up should be used to subtly enhance ones natural beauty, not be caked on like a mask to hide it. I decided it was best not to pass on the benefit of my wisdom however, lest I be branded as the "weirdo on the Metro". Sadly, they were not the only ones. A cursory glance around the carriage revealed several more examples of the same.

I don't like or get that either Stan stan :/ Only time when I go nuts on make up is for dancing! Haha! But out and aboooot... meh!
A BIG hate of mine which I did last night: Over eating so much, that you feel ill... and even then you may still nibble something more DESPITE feeling queezy. It's once in a blue moon but... Why do I do this?! I reach a happy comfortably full medium and then continue eating like some out of control cookie monster until I feel quiffy.... and then eat some more! There's no sense to it! Okay, it might taste nice but I'm feeling skanky! It makes no sense! I've not done it in ages but last night. Bleh. I felt horrible when I went to bed! Damn tasty lasagne and nearly a whole baguette of garlic bread! Healthy eating went riiiiiiight out the window!! |

Must've been something in the air last night - I did the same. I had an enormous plateful of Thai Green Chicken Curry and Rice for dinner. Within an hour, I was eating loads of Roquefort with crackers and then I started on sweeties - I just lay there like a beached whale groaning because I was full yet still stuffing Tangfastics into my face
