Wow! Loved this film. It's very hard to describe - moody, funny, violent, touching. You find yourself strangely drawn to the lead character, sometimes empathising with him, sometimes disgusted by him. Definitely worth watching!

9/10

Interesting. I loved it when I saw it. Just goes to show that we all like different things, I suppose.

Daft, cliched and predictable but what do you expect. It was still highly amusing and even the wife, who usually considers this sort of humour annoying rather than funny, found herself crying with laughter in some places.

The Warriors

Starring
  • Michael Beck
  • James Remar
  • Dorsey Wright
  • Brian Tyler
Thriller film

6/10 It's a decent enough film but I don't think it has aged particularly well, maybe it's because I'd heard too much about it beforehand regarding how good it was but I was left slightly underwhelmed by it.

Miller's Crossing

Starring
  • Gabriel Byrne
  • Marcia Gay Harding
  • John Turturro
  • Jon Polito
Coen Brothers' film

8/10 A really good film with solid performances throughout, in some ways just a pastiche of many previous gangster films but so well handled and done with such obvious reverence for the originals that it would be churlish to hold that against it. Gabriel Bryne puts in a great turn as the amoral anti-hero - it is however quite distinctly a Coen Brothers film so if you don't like their films I'd suggest deducting a mark.

Night Of The Living Dead

Starring
  • Duane Jones
  • Judith O'Dea
  • Karl Hardman
  • Marilyn Eastman
Thriller

4/10 I just didn't get into this film at all, I'm aware that in some quarters it is thought of as a masterpiece but I can't help feeling that nostalgia plays a large part in that. There was little to nothing that made me feel any relationship to the characters, the zombies weren't particularly scary and it just seemed devoid of any real interest. Maybe that's due to me having watched more modern and graphic films meaning this failed to hold my attention but I don't think so, I suspect it's another one where nostalgia pays a big part in its high rating.

A film I don't want to re-watch as I can imagine it not ageing well as you say. I'll happily live with the memories

The Losers

Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Zoe Saldana
Chris Evans
et. al.

7/10

Dead Denny.. whoops I mean Clay (sorry, Kari has been watching a lot of Grey's Anatomy recently), is a colonel in charge of an elite unit of soldiers who find themselves double-crossed by a somewhat dirty and well connected CIA agent (Max, played perfectly by Jason Patric), who arranges for them to die when they refuse to kill innocent children. Fortunately for the film he fails and the story focuses on their attempt to get revenge, aided by the mysterious Aisha (Zoe Saldana being.. well Zoe Saldana)

The squad is very generic. Chris Evans is the comedic geek role (but still a good soldier), Columbus Short plays Pooch the witty black guy, Idris Elba the angry big black guy, and Óscar Jaenada the mysterious sniper who has probably only a dozen lines in the entire film.

The plot isn't quite so generic, but still doesn't present any particular surprises. That said Kari and I both enjoyed it a lot and laughed quite frequently. It doesn't bring anything particularly new to the table but instead focuses on bringing a polished film.

My only quibble really comes towards the end of the film when they almost ludicrously set the film up for a sequel, and then try to add a feel good ending that ignores the consequences of that setup almost entirely.

Still I reckon it's worth a watch. Neither Kari nor I remember adding it to our netflix queue, so were a little surprised when it turned up in the post but figured it was worth a watch anyway. Glad we did.

Went and saw the new Sherlock Holmes on Friday and loved it they put more of the calculation/thinking scenes in which I though was simply brilliant in the first film and was sorely disappointed they didn't do more of throughout it.

Today I watched The Life Aquatic which was a really nice, really simple film - no huge storyline, no huge violence/fights/drama - just oddly pleasant

Bigger issue : Was there more half-naked RDJ in it than the first one? I need to know.
