I know little about the original books as I've never read them. I only know about them vicariously because Michael Moorcock is a fan of them and he wrote some similar stories.

However, I read a review by MM of this film and he seemed to really enjoy it. A lot of fans of the original books seemed to enjoy it too, although they all did all say that the film was too close to the "concept" of the books to be commercial... Maybe it's one of those "by fans for true fans only" things...

Avengers

10/10 for me, and easily the best film, of any kind, I've seen since The Dark Knight. I can completely understand why it's smashed virtually every box office record out there (though I think Dark Knight Rises will beat all the new records). So enjoyable I would happily pay to go the cinema again next week to watch it. Genuinely funny at times, especially The Hulk, who made me cover my own mouth to stop myself from laughing too much on more than one occasion. Brilliant!

Prometheus

I think that your attitude towards this film will depend on your attitude towards SciFi. If you love the original Alien(s) films and think this should be a seamless match then sorry but you are in for a disappointment. If like me you were looking forward to Ridley Scott revisiting SciFi then I think that you are in for a treat. I'm not going to bother discussing the story as frankly if you want to know, you already will so instead onto the cinematography which is very pretty (in 2D) and the soundtrack which was well suited.

So on the cast, Noomi Rapace played a very Ripleyesque character very well, Michael Fassbender is brilliant though does suffer from the classic cinema problem of being more advanced that the character that came before him in 1979 (think the Star Trek reboot) and Idris Elba just make me man crush horny as usual. The rest of the cast did a good job though personally I felt that Charlize Theron could have done better with what was frankly a rather superfluous role.

As I said at the start your enjoyment of this film will really depend on your attitude, for me it was an 8/10 and one of the better films I've seen in quite a while. For others I could certainly understand a 6/10

I think I'm going to really be disappointed by Prometheus.

I recently watched Aliens again (and introduced Chrispy Coates to it too!) and just have waaay too much love for it. Being a prequel I thought it would carry much of the same thread and ambiance as the first two at least. I, however, have the feeling that Prometheus is leaning towards more of a Hollywood blockbuster style film.

I have sworn if Charlize Theron is not an android I will be super pissed off. Don't get me wrong, she's a great actress, but she's too Hollywood and pretty looking for what I was hoping to get out of this film. I think my hope of grimey hard core muddy funsters and the awesomeness that is Vasquez and Ripley is going to be nuked.

/prepares to be ranty upon seeing the film!

Prometheus: 6/10 (Thanks, Del

I found it utterly predictable, some very groany "oh no, they didn't do that" moments & I thought the characters were completely unengaging, both with other characters and the audience. I felt they staggered through some plot-points & raced through others. Charlize Theron, who I do consider to be a great actress from what I've seen (Monster, in particular) was completely flat. I know she's meant to be a no-nonsense character, but just flat and cold didn't do it for me. I thought that without the ALIEN reference, it would have been a bog-standard sci-fi film. Nothing great about it but not dreadful. Idris Elba was the best thing about it. It was alright. In 3D/iMax probably the effects would be pretty good and might have raised it to a 7. Oh and as Dr Z said on FB - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, RUN SIDEWARDS!

Dark Shadows: 3/10

Horribly disappointing. Love a bit of Depp & Burton, but I think the partnership has overrun its course now. This character was a mish-mash of Jack Sparrow & Edward Scissorhands. Eva Green proves yet again she is just a body with a moveable eyebrow (rare in Hollywood, admittedly) because she really can't act her way out of a paper bag.

Not sure if it wanted to be a black comedy, a Stardust type film or a cheesy kiddie style horror, it fell flat on all counts.
