It could well cause a brief lag spike (both from the albeit brief download and the CPU cycles used to process that download). Won't be long, but long enough for a hardcore gamer to notice no doubt.

I use Avast and have done for years now, in fact most of my mates use it on my recommendation because it is good, free and regularly updates.
Leperous Dust - the update could be enough to slow you down, when mine updates I get maybe a couple of seconds where the system just slows down then the annoying voice telling me Avast has updated, now granted I'm still on a single core (A64 3400) but it might be enough to affect anyone and these things can count. //edit I'm with Virgin/Telewest or whatever they are called now and it is a 4mb line I think.
