Thinking of swapping my Shuttle PC for a NAS

I've got a Shuttle, it sits there running ABC for torrents and sharing a folder full of MP3s. That's it.

I'm thinking of getting rid of it and replacing it with a NAS drive, installing the torrent software on my server box and maybe using it (if I can) to serve the Xbox for media.

Is this likely to be a good solution?

And what's my Shuttle worth if I were to try and sell it?

Shuttle SN45G with 1Gb of OCZ Dual Channel DDR, an AMD XP-3200+, a 250Gb drive and a (rather nice) Samsung SH-182M optical drive. It currently has an ATI 9200 video card in it but I've got a 128Mb Nvidia 6600GT DDR3 Dual DVI card I'd rather supply as Mark gave me the 9200 and it feels wrong to try and sell a system with a donated card. The 6600GT works fine, but it touches the cover if it's on. It also has an uprated 'silent' PSU and I swapped the main fan for a quieter one.

Well, the rather nice Samsung SH-182M can be had new for £17.61. I know this because I bought one, yesterday. If you would prefer to pass along the 9200 and keep the 6600, then by all means. I usually request a small donation to a charity of some kind, but it's up to you. I'm unsure of the value of the rest, but a considerable proportion of it is rather old and unless there's a following (like there is for ATCS cases), tends to depreciate rapidly.

If you have a server box already, why not use that to do the NAS work? Couple of big disks for that will probably be cheaper (and more flexible) than a dedicated NAS box, especially if the server has to be on anyway to do download work.

I'm not sure of the mileage on Xbox360 -> NAS, either. You might not get very far on that one.

In other words, consolidate by all means, but I'm not sure NAS is the right way to go.

IME, a server box running some sort of server OS > NAS box, for almost everything.

I have run fileservers using Gentoo/Ubuntu server and FreeNAS and ofc I have used server 2003 etc. FreeNAS is pretty good, sort of like your standard off-the-shelf NAS box in terms of the webUI. Ubuntu gave me the best control whilst still being easyish to use and Win2k3 was the simplest of them all but not really as flexible or free!

Big disks in a computer is the way to go...

Seeing as Vix commandeered an empty shuttle case at the cottaging meet on the basis that "It's Red" without thought to the fact that I'd then have to find a means of getting hold of the rest of the shuttle specific bits to make it work i'd be interested in taking it off your hands if the price were right.

Because I'm supposed to know that they don't just take normal PC bits - being ever so computer knowledgeable.

i did it purely to make more hassle for Phil clearly.
