Or just use VLC's Open Directory feature. Just need the avi's in the same folder.

Think you can. I rip my DVDs to my external HDD and VLC has no problems playing stuff off it.

Running VLC on an external HDD media player might be challenging though.

Depending on which tool you're using there might be options to combine the files into one. Or, the player might have some limited playlist support (some do).

Yes I know its standalone but surely its connected to the PC in someway?

And I don't put VLC on my external HDD. I just run it from C:

Hello, i certainly did .

I found FairUse very easy to use and am very happy with the results, grabbed a retail version off a torrent so i could change file size from 700mb to 1gig for a slightly higher resolution. Plus it had no sound sync problems at all.

What it can't do is help me with is one of the films i am trying to convert which has come down as the VOB files etc and not an actual ISO so i can't mount it. Anyone know a good way of getting round that without creating a DVD job in Nero?

It's a hardware media player not just a external HDD

Check the link i posted
I have something similar and if I press play on the folder the files are in then it'll play all the files inside in order.
