Gaim popup annoyance

Can any of you Linux guru types help me out here please?

I can't find out how to stop those bloody annoying popups Gaim keeps throwing at me, telling me I have new mail in my Hotmail account.
How do I tell it I don't ****ing care if I've got new mail? - I'll check it when I'm good and ready

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It's probably something really simple and obvious but I can't seem to find the solution.

If there is no solution, can anyone suggest an IM app which is better?
(Running Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) on the laptop btw).
