Default Actually pondering BT broadband.

And I dont know if I'm going bonkers or not. I'm not bothered about having massive downstream, 3 or 4 Mb would do me fine. The 'option 3' broadband comes with their hub phone and free off peak calls to landlines with their voip service, and I get a their BT vision service, which gives us a freeview hard disk recorder box and access to streaming content over the web. £25 for that lot doesn't seem bad to me. (less for the first couple of months but meh.

Am I mad for even considering it?

Seems like a good deal overall but have no idea what their service is like.

I have bt at work and have done since January. I haven't had any problems with it so far but I do know the support is terrible so if you do have a problem don't expect it fixed in a hurry.

I was with BT once (back when it was BT Openworld or nowt much else), and it was fine. The only issue I would have would be the BT Home Hub of which I have heard not good things (certainly not as good as that Draytek 2800 you've probably still got anyway - I have uptime of 135 days on mine).

They don't have a clue what they're doing. We're tied to BT for the next few months, after which we're getting out of there. If you unplug the BT home hub for any period of time it will reset the speed of the line to 512Kb, and over the next few days build it up to max speed. It would appear that no-one at BT knows this, and when we complained about the speed of our line they told us the maximum speed we could get was 512Kb. Bollocks. We've had 2Mb speeds before, but kept resetting the hub to see if it made a difference... of course resetting the speed back to 512Kb every time. No other ISP does this, they all instantly set the speed back to maximum, and BT give no reasoning for why they do this. Only now, after a 'free' upgrade from 'up to 2Mb' to 'up to 8Mb' are we finally seeing around 3Mb speeds. Of course in exchange for the upgrade we had to stay with BT for a further 12 months.

BT sucks, and they don't even know why they suck.

BT do indeed suck. It's taken me 6 weeks and 4 separate orders to arrange just connecting the phone line, which isnt helping the decision I'll admit. The saving grace on that front it a guy I work with - he's been in the same position as me (just moved house, **** BT experience), had so much hassle getting DSL from Sky that he just decided to let BT sort it and touch wood he's had no problems.

Hmm.

Mark - Anything specifically bad about the home hub? And I have a 2910, (was with Virgin), which I could still use for most things if the home hub was truly pants.

Nope - nothing specific. I think a few members here have them though so hopefully they'll know better.

Also, I forgot, but when I left BT they pursued me for about two years for 1p. No, I'm not kidding - one solitary penny. I phoned them up and they said it was silly and wiped it off the account, then sent me a final demand six months later. Having had phonecalls, letters, and actually paying the bill, that 1p probably turned into about £2 for each of us. :/

I worked for BT BB - hated 'em I wouldn't go with anyone but cable these days.

However if you do have to go ADSL, bear in mind any problems with the line will still be sorted by BT so it would be better to go with them in the first place I guess.
