I was told a fair while ago that the candles are very dangerous, all it takes is for a hot wax drip to drop in the wrong place and you're in a lot of pain from it. Plus, a candle burned outside the ear produces as much stuff than one burned in the ear, it's not actually drawing anything out at all, the crap you see is just its own residue.

I had mine done a couple of years back when I had an ear infection that resulted in my ears blocking up entirely with wax. I had to suffer with no hearing from my right ear for a week, alongside about 40% hearing in my left as the doc decided it was too soon to get them done.
Wasn't the most pleasant of experiences, but being able to hear properly afterwards was fantastic

I had to go in Hospital to have my ears syringed 35 years ago
It was great, I stayed in Charring cross hospital on the 15th floor & was well looked after. These days they do it under local but back then it was quite a big deal. I was Deaf
Nowadays though the candles are the way forward. Very effective & quite comforting as well

3 weeks before i went into hospital to get sorted my Mum stabbed me for the first time for saying What 3 times
It was my teacher who found out i was Deaf by coming up behind me & clapping. Mrs Buchanan, Thank You

If you can happily have your foof waxed I'm sure you'll survive an ear syringe

I'm told the ear candles are genius though! I would do that! The ones I got my Dad didn't work very well (though he does have an awful lot of ear hair) ... so I would get someone elses recommendation as to where you can get them from!

don't bother with the hopi ear candles.
complete fraud.
if you open one up, they're sealed inside with yellow wax. you light it, let it burn down, and lo and behold it looks like loads of ear wax has been drawn out, when in fact it was already in there.
there is no proof to suggest they work, the flame will not cause enough suction to 'vacuum' out any ear wax.
(i worked in an alternative remedy shop for 4 years conning people into buying stuff like this, now i'm trying to persuade people out of it!!)
but my dad has his ears syringed often - and it seems to work, for a while atleast

I did always wonder how candles were meant to help ear wax - always seemed a bit odd to me.

The way kitten described is how Mic deals with it although he doesn't have to have them syringed any more as the oil is enough

had it done in Feb, will be getting it done again before x-mas, Doc said just to go in and have it done whenever I feel it needs doing (due to re-occurring chest and ear infections )
