Default Automatic organ donation

Been having a read of the article on the BBC website about the Organ donor system becoming opt out linky and then made the mistake of moving onto the comments section.

I was utterly astounded to see how many people were against the idea as they would never want to be an organ donor and it got me thinking. If these people won't donate organs why should they be able to receive them? Why not implement a system whereby people who need a transplant and are donors when the need arises get put towards the top of the list and people who are not donors get put towards the bottom. We already judge people who need transplants on certain criteria (alcoholics don't get livers unless they're a famous football player) so why not add another one that would encourage people to become donors in the first place?

I'm struggling to work out where I am on this one, in principle I like the idea of the opt-out system but I can't help but feel that it would end up being abused.

My only issue with organ donation, is that it's not given to an alcoholic or someone who;s abused their body and will not look after their new organ. People like George Best come to mind - other than that I'm all in favour of helping to save someones life when I pass on.

So people refuse to donate their organs, but what if they needed a transplant one day?

I carry a donor card and have stated any part of my body is to be used after I die. I dont see the problem, if you're dead, what else are you going to use your organs for? Nor should it be up to the families to go against your wishes, its not their call.

Sorry that sounded a little blunt, just my opinion.

Totally agree - whilst I don't really like the thought of Jamie being all cut up ... he'd be dead so what difference would it make to him ?

Also it would be nice to know he's helped someone after his death.

IMO if you opt out of being a donor you can bloody well opt out of receiving an organ donation.

Take me off the list for receiving then. I don't know why and I'm sure it's totally irrational but I've always known and said that I don't want to be chopped up for spare parts. Mrs. Feek and I have discussed it and she feels the same.

How come Feek? Wouldn't you feel better knowing you've helped someone live after you've died?

I can see this thread turning quite morbid

I really can't explain it, I know it's a good thing and I know that it saves lifes and that there's a shortage of doners etc etc but I just can't bring myself to say "yes, strip me down and use me for spares". It's not a religious or family thing, it's just how I've always felt.

Absolutely completely and utterly agree. I'll be dead. I won't feel it. I have absolutely no use for my old bits, so why keep them.

Just looked at my doner card in my wallet, first signed in '95

Never had a problem with this at all and am quite happy to have anything used. I'm even on the RSPCA register just in case any horse needs my cock
