Default Hypothetical Leopard question

Can they change their spots?

But seriously.

If, hypothetically, someone worked for a university in a job where they had been supplied with a Macbook Pro and a copy of Leopard, and had installed that copy of Leopard... what would be the repercussions of also installing that copy of Leopard on my... I mean their... own Macbook Pro given that no-one would ever know? Would it register that it had been installed twice?

I was on the brink of simply ordering a copy myself (mainly to get Boot Camp) then remembered we had a copy at work.

I mean this person did, in the oddly specific hypothetical situation I concocted.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I believe you may need to go see a man in a white coat about that - make sure he has a straightjacket and a padded cell at the ready.

As for whether it 'phones home', dunno. Possible I suppose. I don't know if the installation asks of any kind of license key or if one is embedded. If not, then I'm sure we can all keep

Asfar as I'm aware it isn't registered in anyway like MS do. So you should be ok Essentially the repercussions are it's piracy as you only have 1 licenced copy of leopard and it's on 2 machines.

I've never come across anything like this in OS x before. Hell, they don't even use a serial key for installation.

There's no license key but it did ask me to re-register when I installed it on the work one. All the fields were filled in and I just clicked next. I just can't remember if it gave you the option to skip registration. Hmm.

Exactly, this was my concern. I wouldn't even be bothered about Leopard if it weren't for the fact that they've withdrawn the beta version of Boot Camp and it is now only available with Leopard. The funny thing is I have a legitimate copy of XP that I'll be installing!

I think you can skip registration, I did it on Kitten's G3 install of Panther.

I'm afraid you might have to fork out for a copy of Leopard then but then again if you don't get caught which I doubt you will, you should be ok to have it in on the 2 machines.

Thanks for the info. I may end up just buying it anyway - £80 isn't bad considering Vista prices.

Just ordered it. Probably wasn't worth the hassle considering it's a work copy as well.
