Is the network card showing in Device Manager? (R click My Computer - properties - hardware etc) It might be disabled in there. Any yellow excalamtion marks?

If it's not showing it might have got disabled in the bios somehow.

You can also uninstall and reinstall it from there. If it's missing let the system do a search with the mag glass icon.

Worth checking the networking services too (Start - run - services.msc) but it's been too long and I'm too drugged up so I can't remember which services need to be running now

FFS, why do we take on these things? Finished installing SP2 and now on reboot I get the following error...

STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image ole32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

This is going to need a proper rescuing now :/

Sounds like the spyware got a little deeper into the system than you expected. Clearly wasn't detecting the NIC which could be corrupt drivers, especially if other files are now coming back corrupt as well. I'd be wary of the hard drive just incase that's on it's way out.

Currently downloading a copy of XP Home so I can get into the recovery console and replace the offending file.

All sorted now

Replaced ole32.dll in the recovery console and then restarted. Still had problems with no taskbar and RPC not starting. Did a system file check and scan and it's all repaired and up and running

Then reinstalled the network driver and it's working a treat. AT LAST!!!!

Cheers for all the input
