Installing Windows 2008 Enterprise for testing purposes.

We're looking at building a web hosting environment based on it, one to at least last a couple of years, hooked up by iSCSI to a backend storage device so we need to do some testing first

You can nab it from here here and install it for free. Sans licence code it'll run for 90 days before stopping.

edit: Looks like that should be 60 days not 90 as I was informed. Oh well

Then the first hitch.. it didn't identify the network card

Easily fix0red by switching to an emulation of an Intel network card (usually a safe bet)

Adding roles to the server is much improved from the past, almost up to linux repository level (still wonder why MS haven't considered adding such functionality to servers, its a superb feature of most mainstream Linux distros.)

The 'xcopy deploy' feature (as they're calling it) will make maintaining IIS clusters a lot easier (deploying sites, apps and configurations by simply copying files to boxes, what a novel idea, ay?

). Troubleshooting IIS is also a lot better now it's all one code base.

After a quick read server core seems an interesting concept that probably should have been around since "windows server" was first conceptualised...

A server sans GUI? But then its not so accessible to your minimum wage monkeys who think they have the skills and knowledge to run a server because they've built a few PCs and installed and played some games.

Spot the guy that has got sick and tired this week of blocking IPs on mail relays of customers who setup mail servers in default states and leave them operating as open relays that any spammer can take advantage of.

Our trio of good Windows Sysadmins are loving PowerShell, just discovering some of the delights that us *nix folk have been using for a while, scripting and the like. One of the trio, the boss, has okayish *nix skills and has been loving the chance to get what he feels is the best of both worlds.

Server Core is the such a waste of an opportunity. Dont be fooled, it still has a GUI. No shell, but still loads graphics drivers, still has the same winlogon stuff, just doesnt have a start bar and explorer. Only real benefit I can see is less updates and rebooting in turn.

Powershell is a waste too. Powershell should have just replaced the current shell, not be an add-on which only supports a few products.

Tbh thats sounds like a round about half assed MS way of doing things though... So basically servercore is like ending the explorer process?

On the surface aye. It allows them to leave out a lot of stuff, so it is smaller, but all that happens when you log on is you get a command prompt. Why they didnt leave all the GUI stuff out of memory/kernel and just have a CLI logon I'll never know.

One for Daz, possibly. Last one I downloaded said it was RC0 but I re-downloaded last week and no mention of it being a Release Candidate.

Is Server 2008 actually released now? When did that happen?
