Hard Disks

Whoever invented the hard disk needs to be spun around at 7,200 rpm.

So, I get some errors on my main PC's main disk yesterday. Ouch, not good. I then go to move data off of that disk. Video files get moved to the media PC, where they should have been anyway, and the rest go on a removable drive which I keep next to the PC for backups.

Then I get bad sectors on the backup drive.

Oddly, the problems I was having on the main disk have subsided (though I think they've not entirely gone). Given the age of this system I hope it's not something more serious (I'll have to do a rebuild anyway before this year is out I suspect - just preferably not yet).

I have too many disks around here and really need to rationalise - there's somewhere around 5TB of storage and somewhere around 3TB of that is in use with god knows what. Certainly doesn't make planning backups easy which would be why I rarely do them. :/

Dud / dying disks are a pain in the arse!!!

Aye - just evaluating the extent of the damage. So far it's showing four destroyed VM disk images, but they're all just bare OS images so easily replaced. Still got a long way to go yet though (on both disks).

lol - sure I used to have one of those in an early PC

I find it best to keep away from Hard Disks with names that sound explosive (Deskstar/Deathstar and now the Fireball)

I'm fairly sure I had a fireball or two as well.

Finished checks - just four bad files - and no bad sectors. What's up with that.

Did have problems the other day on other files though (since moved elsewhere).

It's called character. Just glad it's an empty disk. Think it was bought from PC World too, so I suppose I deserve it.

i need to invest in some new HDDs so i can get some coppies of my important data and have space to spread out a little. all of my partitions are getting a little fat.

The Samsung SATA II hdds are pretty darned good. Got the 500Gb in an external IcyBox enclosure. Will almost certainly use one for my next PC build.

Old drive was an HD400LJ. New one is an HD501LJ (when I get around to installing it).
