Default iPod Touch, iTunes & 64 bit Windoze Vista

Hi all,

On Mon I treated myself to a new 16GB iPod Touch. Now, I am having a nightmare with it.. It appears that support for the iPod Touch (and the iPhone) is still ropey on Windows Vista, specifically the 64bit flavour. I am on Home Premium. When I plug in my iPod, it makes a short bleep noise, and an image appears on the screen of the iPod of the Apple USB plug with an up arrow pointing to the disc and blue note symbol for iTunes. Then it just goes off.

iTunes meanwhile throws out an error that an iPhone has been detected, but not installed correctly, that I should try again.

Last night I:
  • Installed Vista SP1
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled all USB Device Drivers
  • Uninstalled & reinstalled iTunes - the latest release is 7.6.2.9 - if you download it with IE (64bit) then iTunes should recognise the 64bit OS and install the correct version.
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the iPod Touch drivers, called Apple Mobile Device in my Device Manager list.

So now I have a £217 paperweight at home which Apple tell me ought to work, Microsoft tell me ought to work, and yet it doesn't work.

I can't think of anything else to change in order to get it working, I have surfed around and found a lot of suggestions that didn't seem to work for me.
Has anyone got any ideas for how I can get this working? Does any have an iPod touch or an iPhone working with 64 bit Vista?

TIA.

Stick a clean install of Vista 64 bit on a VM or partician along with the latest iTunes just to confirm that it actually works on Vista 64.

I'd guess your problem is your Quicktime install ended up in the 'wrong' directory and even though you have tried getting 64bit version since by using IE64, it's already cocked up.

So far as I can tell. I've had iTunes running reasonably well for ~ 6 months on Vista, and it is happy to recognise and sync to my old Gen 4 iPod, the last clickwheel one, but it won't have any of the Touch.

I might try what rich has suggested above. Totally remove iTunes and QuickTime from the machine, clean registry etc etc then follow the steps in his link. I don't see why the 64 bit iTunes installer I got earlier in the week wouldn't have done it, but its worth a crack.

iTunes is compatible with Vista x64 now and the iPod Touch, I've been using it for a few months.

You've done well then chap 'cos I've given up trying to get the two to play nice together.. I have backed up and transferred my music library to an old XP box for the iPod. Absolute joke that I have trouble with Vista, even if it is user error it should be idiot proof by now, and yet I plug the bugger in to XP and it does exactly what I want it to do instantaneously.
