Alternatively, if using pins, try taping masking tape to the wall and banging the pin in through that... May make it less likely to crack plaster.

If you have those crap pretend walls then you need the rawplugs that open out like butterfly wings.
Way forward is to go to a DIY store & buy 2 drill bits say 10mm (smaller for small hangers obviously) & a whole rake of said rawplugs to suit.
The secret is the drill into the wall about 2mm deeper than the rawplug needs.

I seem to remember being told that tapping the tip of the pin/nail with the hammer to blunt it first makes it far less likely to cause a crack.
