Default Mobile Service Provider Trouble!

Ok, I got a new contract and phone the other day. I'm trying to keep my phone number as it's on my CVs etc so don't want to change it for now.

My bill says Vodaphone on it and when I call them to request a PAC code they say my number is not registered with them.

A guy from O2 just called my new number to welcome me to O2 and was asking if I had any problems and when I mentioned the above he took my old number and did a search but said I wasn't registered with them either (even though I have O2 Voicemail etc). He called my number and he tells me it is an O2 number but for some reason can't find it on the system so he gives me a number for customer services to find out my service provider.

I call the number he gave me and it says I'm with an independant service provider but it doesn't tell me who.

So now I'm stuck with two phones and two contracts, one of which I don't need and is hideously expensive.

Has anyone got any advice? Has it happened to anyone before? How can I get it sorted if know one knows who I'm with?

This is really stressing me out!!

Thanks,
Lorraine xx
