Quite tempted as a DVD unit for my Gran so I can unbrick my Apple TV but it still fails big style by not being able to play mkv files above 480p.

If you're looking to buy an Apple TV to go with the software then I still think that the IStar HD is a far better bet. If you already have an Apple TV then it could be a good bet though from my brief look it looks like they have collected and made an easy install for a load of software that is available for free and has been for quite a while.

Yup. I think it depends a lot on the format of the video. Mov files fail badly. Many of my 720p avi's work fine though.

I only have mkv. Not many really. Planet Earth, Matrix, Transformers & Superman. None work well. Shame cos Planet Earth is stunning in HD.

Got Planet Earth and the Matrix Trilogy on HD-DVD. The cave Planet Earth episode is one pf the best things I've ever seen in HD.

Once the price of BluRay disks comes down they will get converted.
