Default mwahahaha new motor

Yes I am still grinning, especially after 4k rpm

Well what can I say? Its been a frickin long time coming. Most of you will know that I’ve been after one for a long time. I have considered 200sx’s, 300zx, FTO/GTO, mx5, mr2. I was settled on around the 5-7k mark for something rather tasty. The problem was saving up, with the house sucking up most of the funds I had very little to play with. A friend of mine recently got himself a nice motor and is finding that he’s not having so much fun on track due to the value of the car. Thinking about it yep I would crap myself about putting 7k into a tire-wall. As I’m learning something that I wouldn’t be that bothered about binning was more in order.

I have been generally having a flick through pistonheads, autotrader, local rag, ebay etc every now and again. Generally I found most stuff was overpriced or rust ridden or generally a bag of bolts. MX5’s priced themselves out of the game, really you want a 1.8S with the LSD and these aren’t cheap. Option of then adding a turbo or supercharger at a later date.

So in effect I’ve been looking for a good 6 months + for something that catches my eye. Then I spotted it on pistonheads. No price, no phone number and the pictures were crap (scam anyone?). I was in a cheeky mood and fired an email off asking how much. Price was spot on so I went and had a look after getting advice from DRZ, Phil and Vix and a fair bit of reading on the forums.

No surprise I ended up getting it as the shell appeared in good nick and it went well without any iffy noises from the engine. Some initial pics for now, I’ll get better ones later…….. I haven’t washed it yet after doing 250+ miles in the rain. MOT was march and its just done 550 miles since then (including my long trip home).

As I know it will be asked …… check the arches (shiny eh?). Tyres aren't flat, i'm on a slight hill and it looks a lot more flat in the pics? Should add as well that the weld line is not there, have checked in person

Well I got the car, with a set of three spokes for track days and a set of harnesses all thrown in. This was along with pics of the rebuild and all MOT’s and receipts from 1995 onwards. The car gets a LOT of attention. I caught a driver of an M5 having a really good look in the hotel car park with a big grin Everyone in work was asking about it as it kinda stands out from the 205’s and BMW’s that are normally in there. Since getting home the local curtain twitchers curtains nearly came down when I parked last night. The guy over the road with a mk3 is rather put out as his sounds like a bean tin when it starts up (its quieter than the Focus).

Insurance was 290 with mods declared through admiral. They have also given me another policy with 6 years NCB on it as well (so I have two sets).

Bad bits

Drivers seat doesn’t move (bolted to floor) so I need some subframes really.
5th gear pop out. Very common but a bit of an arse as I need a gearbox. Only just started doing this I was informed. I believe the guy as its only occasionally it does it cruising on the motorway.
Stone chip on drivers wheel arch (need to get paint mixed)
Air scoop can’t easily be removed (but not really worried anyway).
Bonnet catch needs a new spring.
Idle’s a little quick at just over 1000 rpm after it’s warmed up.

More to be discovered

Plan

Well it’s a lot of fun to hurl around already as its running KYBs all round. Its sunny as I type this so I’m off for a drive. Longer term I will follow Phil and Vix in entering the sprint series. A lot of work needs to be done with taking stuff out first! I am a bit of a n00b with a spanner so I will be ringing people up and asking what this bit does

Air scoop. It was an optional extra on the mk1's. Doesn't really do much. The previous owner brought it and put it on. It'll stay there as i'm not really worried about it, I know some mk1 owners hate them

God that air acoop is horrendous Steering wheel is pants too, we have an original blue one if you want but as it's a track toy you would be better with a smaller one.

Phil butchered the drivers seat to make it adjust, with us having 2 drivers who differ in size and driving position, we needed an adjustable seat. He did have to use some bits off an original seat though.

It looks really tidy Can't wait to see it!! Birthday trackday in November????

Air scoop was never a factory option. It's a horrible after market thing. Shouldn't be too difficult to get rid of as they're just a replacement for the original metal panel at the side of the engine cover (which I have 2 pairs of in that colour )

Overall it looks good though although I notice the cheapskate who sprayed it has painted over the rubbing strips and not bothered to replace any of the decals At the very least it neess the Toyota one on the nose and the ones for the bootlid putting back. Triple stripe around the car probably isn't worth the bother now the rubbing strips are gone.

As you know I've just broken an identical car to that so I've got most of the original bits you might need including stock seats and a pair of front wings if it's less hassle than getting yours repainted.

With the 5th gear pop out, does it actually come out of gear or does it just move excessivley under accelleration?

Yep I had noticed the rubbing strips had been painted over and the lack of lines going around. I did forget about the marking on the boot though. Front wings seemed fine to me? I might nick a seat off you though just to take the subframe bit off and butcher it to fit the bucket seats.

The steering wheel is pants, the original is in the boot. There is a momo boss on there so I just need to find a small wheel to put on. If you accelerate in 5th then it will pop out. However not always but I can only see it getting worse.

If you need tyres let me know as there is a guy near me that buys loads of overstock tyres from garages.

We have another small steering wheel which Phil bought purely for the boss. It was sold to us as a Momo but after analysing it with our other 2 proper Momos we aren't sure. Have a nosey when you are next over or we can send pics. It's got blue on it!

It's getting to the point that we'll need to rename this forum as the MR2 owners club.

Nice one. Who on earth thought that was a good idea for a steering wheel though - and I don't even drive.

I have issues with steering wheels that aren't round. It's a WHEEL, it should be ROUND for gods sake They are one of my pet peeves.

Phil and I are good at convincing people to buy MR2s though. This is because we have a garage full of spares to get rid of hehe
