Another vote here for a focus. Go for a top end zetec model and you'll find it has a fair bit of poke.

I drive a '53 Focus 1.6 Zetec and it is BOOORRRRRRRING as batsh1t. In fact, after salary review in Nov I'm getting rid and buying something fun. If you can hold out, it's in superb condition, 38k, silver, a/c, 5 door, elec win, rcl, cd/radio, will have 4 new shoes, 10 months MOT/tax and it's 40K service!

If you really want to beat the dealer up a bit, its against the principle of "go to view not to buy"..... have the cash already there and start waving it under his nose. That is if you want the car, I've found that dealers crumble especially in the current market if you flash cash You are bang on the money with that price, they are asking a bit much imo with what they are asking.

Look on the front doors, below the door cards, along the welding seam. Very likely to be surface rust so you can mention that. Check the passenger side footwell and see if its damp. If it is it's nothing major, it means you will need a new pollen filter as the old one wasn't fitted correctly. Its coming up for a cambelt change, the interval is 100k or 10 years. So see if they will do that.

As above, cash is king.

Bear in mind three main points.

1) The car industry is on its arse. Good for buyers, bad for sellers.
2) Never lose sleep over the car you didn't buy.....a better one is ALWAYS around the corner.
3) Don't feel like you're being a cheeky bastard when putting in disgustingly low offers. What's the worst that the seller can do?
Say no?
Oh the tragedy!
Being cheeky will save you hundreds (and in certain cases thousands) of pounds.

You can et a Beemer for £2000 which has a full service ihstory (like my old one) although most are snapped up by wanna be gangster types. For 2k, you could get a mondeo, which is a similar car to what you are getting rid of.
