You're absolutely right, it was a cheap lazy jab at stereotypes but then since you've done the same yourself recently you're probably not in the best position to criticise.

I normally wouldn't make a joke about the Daily Mail because there's more than enough people to do that anyway without me picking on it as well but I figured in a light hearted thread it wouldn't be jumped upon as a big deal.
