If you've got the hardware for it, you might consider trying that F.E.A.R free multiplayer online game thing mentioned in another thread in this section of the forums. That way you can try online combat without having to spend a single penny.

We should be able to set up our own private server using the free version of F.E.A.R. anyway

I'm not totally decided about CS:Source yet, mainly due to the fact I suck and don't really want to pay for the privilege of getting well and truly pwned - I'm sure I have a copy of HL around somewhere so will give CS a try if I can find it
