It's the shape it is for future proofing purposes. They wanted to keep a simple to manufacture design, but one with room for a potential increased numbers of connectors and power strips as possible. Making it shaped would reduce the potential space.
Hence we're now onto USB3 using exactly the same shape and size connector, all that's (fundamentally) different are additional data and power connectors, whilst still enabling USB3 sockets to be 100% backwards compatible. How many other connectors can you think of that have made such leaps and bounds for capabilities and yet still be 100% backwards compatible?

Comparing tech from the mid 1980s to that of the mid 2000s is a bit unfair don't you think?

No, because they still use the same format on DVI-D!

Good Tech.
Mobile phones still Astonish the bejesus out of me, I am sitting next to my mate doing 70mph on the M69, His phone rings & it's a mate of ours on a beech in Jamaica, What the **** How did it pick out his phone & at 70mph & wtf How can we do speaker & slag off matey in Jamaica
Then I stop take a pic, Upload it, Vids to Youtube, Interweb whilst mobile, I say again, What the ****
Awesome Gizmo that should really only be used by Super Heros like us BD'ers.

Memory sticks.
Awesomeness. I carry one in my pocket like a Luger I had during the 2nd World War & it has saved me as many times as well.
All me dodgey films, Moody downloads & Illegal material is stored on these little wonders making my life loads easier/safer. On top of that I have Knoppix 5.3.1 on a stick that I use to sort moody systems out with

Consoles/PC's/Interweb connections/Online gaming.
Complete awesomeness in every way. When I was a kid I dreamt of what games would be like in the future & my dreams have been surpassed. Cheap accessible hardware & super cheap broad band & a massive influx of users/players has brought gaming on no end in the last 5 years.

Bad tech.
Todays cars, Tyres, Battery's, Light bulbs etc etc etc

Starting with cars, They just sux these days, They look ****e & sound ****e & fail to deliver that kick in the sacks schoolboy feeling when you drive them. On top of that I predict that they will all be *ooked in ten years time & laying around virtually worthless. Nobody will spend the 2k it costs to get them back on the road after one of the main boards borks or summit equally expensive.
Tyres & battery's, Light bulbs & other items similar suck because they still wear out & still cost as much money, When I was a kid we expected things to get more durable & better not less durable & cheap & cheerful it suxs.
