Okay okay, clearer post:

People get requested to attend a smear test.

People who want smear test book an appointment.

If they don't turn up, they get fined.

I think people took what I said as "you're booked in, this is the date, if you don't turn up you get fined"

*rams head against the wall*

Well I'd agree with that, it wastes time and money to get you a slot which you then don't turn up for. The finable part is when the person is like "can I have one please?" and never bother going. I still don't understand why people do that anyway.

As already said, drop-in centres are where most smear tests are done and they don't require appointments anyways!
Once again - does knowing you will get a fine if you don't attend you dental appointment stop you from going?

It sounds very irrational to presume that because there's a fine on the end of an appointment, it would stop people going! Surely it would mean they would make more of an effort to turn up when they'd actually booked it?!

My daughter has now had all her HPV vaccines. Am hoping this will cut the risk for her and other girls.

I'm one of the ones who have been for regular smears since I became sexually active. I also had the 'abnormal cell' recall for a few years until whatever activity was happening settled down when I was about 20.

Maybe Kitten!

I don't know! I guess it's something none of us would know fully unless it was implemented and the figures were drawn up.

*shrugs*

It was a suggestion. I still think it's a good one and would outweigh those not wanting to go and encourage those who did... but then I can't say that for sure can I

I missed this one, well said Pete.

Remember when Kylie Minogue had breast cancer? The amount of publicity she had through that was disgusting. I remember seeing a newspaper front page with her hiding in a car, the headline read "So Brave". What!?!?!? Like she is the only person in the world that is battling this disease? What about the thousands and thousands of other people battling it that dont have her money to be able to afford the best care?

Again, thats not to say I didnt feel sorry for her, but she is hardly alone.

I feel really sorry for the girl, her family, and her children.

Sure she's a bit of a plonker but I don't think the "she deserves it" attitudes that I have read on other forums are appropriate or justified.

To undertake the harrowing stretches of chemo and radiotherapy, only to find her symptoms have spread must be soul destroying and an extremely distressing time for everyone involved.

I feel sorry for nearly anyone in those kind of situations.

I don't disagree with the idea that all women should get screen at an early age. That makes perfect sense both from an social and a long term economic point of view. The problem is with the idea of issuing fines for non-attendance of appointments.

It's similar to that at a GUM clinic (which you also don't get fined for missing appointments). Take the example of an 18 year old girl who makes an appointment but at the last moment backs out without reporting it because she's embarrassed. If you fine her for that, it's not going to encourage her to book another appointment because she'll worry about missing it again and being charged £20.

I know it's crap and not ideal when people miss appointments, but I'd rather it cost me a couple of pence a year in tax than people not booking appointments for things like that.
