I had a gollywog when I was little, oh I loved my gollywog. He had blue trousers and he was the aces! Though if I am honest as a child I didn't know he was supposed to be a black person, I just thought he was a 'thing'..... like a dragon or a fairy or something.
Hang on are raggedy ann dolls offensive to ginger haired people too? |

I agree, as a kid it was a funny little dude with a funny little name. I didn't associate any racial or offensive connotations.

I take offence on behalf of all black people (even those who don't care, because they should) that you have compared them to a 'thing'.

What about the maid with the fat legs on Tom and Jerry?
As a white person, I find that deeply offensive to black people.

Which is why on some of the DVD releases she has been digitally altered to a white person.

Brilliant thinking. Is 'whiting up' or replacing a black stereotype more or less racist than the original stereotype? I just don't know any more. Once again, all I saw was a jolly lady outraged at the antics of her pet cat. Now they've completely emphasised what was for me a non-issue. Idiots.
