What Photoshop?

What Photoshop is recommended these days for basic Photo editing?

I could also do with something for making simple website banners too, quite like the Boat Drinks one above.

Would Elements do or do I really need to get CS4? (Extended seems a bit OTT)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Elements would do 95% of casual users like yourself absolutely fine.

There is a tiny install for CS4 out there which is brilliant.

If you're not going to buy it, you might as well just get the full extended one but if you're the honest type and paying then Elements is fine.

I personally use CS3 though as I didn't like the small changes in interface from CS3 to CS4.

Can you do stuff like your sig image with Elements or do you need the real deal for that kind of thing?

Pretty sure Elements would do it. Most of the stuff cut out really is mostly only used by serious hobbyists or professionals.

You'd probably find any number of freeware apps like Paint.NET or GIMP will do what you want too, but any guides online will more than likely be written with Photoshop in mind.

http://www.pixlr.com/app is very good too, if you're ever stuck on a machine which won't let you install stuff.

Some are very irksome, such as the speed changing between seperate files. But I do think it's a big improvement.

I just hated the way the work area changed. IMO it was a step back from the way they did it in CS3 and i've not found a way to change it back. Part of it was just the fact it forces its own skin and if anything seems slower for it.

Really? I've found CS4 is a massive improvement in responsiveness.
I've found some things awkward, but I'll just have to get on with it. The change from Photoshop 6 to Photoshop 7 was the one that annoyed me most of all. I do like some of the improvements in the new version.
