Free DVD Player Soft Ware

Hello,

I an looking for a free DVD player software for my new Laptop.
I have found this ;

is this any good or is there a better one to use, will this play HD movies ?
Also what about a Free ripper as well !

I use VLC

Handbrake for ripping, probably.

I've not tried that one, I occasionally use AVS Media Player which says it supports WMV-HD although I've never tested that part of it and it is fine for a free player, it isn't quite as quick as PowerDVD but it does the job.

Gordian Knot is something I've used for ripping in the past but I haven't tried it for quite a long time now so it might be hopelessly outdated.

For playing DVDs, get the CCCP (with Media Player Classic Home Cinema). This will play DVDs, I think it might do BluRay (a BluRay drive should come with something though, like PowerDVD HD), it will play HD MKV files etc. assuming your PC is up to it. I much prefer MPC-HC to VLC et al. personally.

For ripping, that gets more complex as technically that's not always legal so you need to be bypassing copy protection etc. Someone else can probably advise the easiest way as I use a couple of separate programs for ripping and re-encoding.

My media player of choice is BSPlayer, really good and last time i checked plays DVDs flawlessly. It also downloads all codecs automatically which is nice.

I use VLC for getting effortless 5.1 sound. I found CCCP and BSPlayer a total pain in the ass for that, though BSplayer is really nice.

BSPlayer used to be a chore but with their most recent version it has the aforementioned ability to download codecs. Because of that it automatically downloads codecs that BSPlayer is happy to output 5.1 with. I admit though, before the downloader surfaced BSPlayer was awful when it came to codec incompatibilities. My big (and only) complaint with VLC is that skipping around in high definition files is slow and clunky and often results in strange picture corruption for a short period.

The codecs in VLC often seem to be the first one the team happen to come across, and I find things like black crushing and over saturation often occur.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of CCCP as a lot more thought seems to have gone into codec choices.
