The secondhand example I'm looking at which is fully loaded; leather, glass roof, bluetooth 6 disc stereo, xenons etc is priced at £15k its a 2009 with 13,000 miles which seems pretty good.

Corrola Verso we did look at, to be honest its a little larger than we need, there is a 5 seater version now based on the Avensis chassis but I wasn't impressed enough to buy new

How about the skoda octavia? Sporty car, big enough for a family and all the mod cons?

There are some cracking cars being suggested but I really think a 4x4 or a crossover will suit us, I know they aren't to everyones taste but the layout of the boot space is ideal for us as is having a high space in the back to work with. For a shorter family this would be a nightmare, having to lift a child and the equipment up into a higher boot or onto a higher back seat but for us it will save us stooping and having to contort into boot spaces and lift things in over boot lips.

So right now the short list is; RAV4 and QQ, I've pretty much ruled out the CRV, Civic and A3/4 which were also on the list. I don't want a people carrier like a Xara Picasso etc and the S-Max isn't to my taste. Kuga is still a possibility but more money than I really want to spend. I've been reading a lot of reviews and I can't find any that are heavily anti-QQ, the only niggles were towards the start of production or with diesel particulate filters which the petrol won't have. Reviews seem positive about the RAV4 too and I'd be able to get an XT4 which is towards the top of the range and has the extras that will make swaping the MINI acceptable.

At the moment my thoughts are towards doing this sooner rather than later as I feel a larger car will be useful when we are getting the house ready taking rubbish to the tip etc also the MINI is a thirsty car and as petrol prices increase people will become more reticent about buying her.

My Brother has got a Ford Kuga and is living in Germany at the moment. Both him and my sister inlaw love it. It's great for them and the 2 boys both around town and on the journey back over to rainy old blighty which takes a heck of a lot of drive time.

It's a very comfortable car, loads of room for a baby seat and everything you need for a baby!

I've not driven it myself, but my Dad has and said it's lovely to drive

My car was in for a service today so spent the day with a top of the line Ford Kuga.
Something like £32 grands worth of Ford... *eep*

It wasn't that horrible. Didn't like the driving position, equipment level was very good though - I suppose for £32k it should be. Ride was pretty good, engine was very good as it's the same engine as in the Focus ST - 4wd system kind of sapped some of the power, but was fine for the back country jaunt I took it on. Fuel consumption was pretty horrible though... It was around 17mpg. Around the same as my RX-8 gets on the same trip.

Not my kinda thing, but I could certainly live with one for a short time.

Its alright, to be honest though I was going to be disapointed with anything other than the MINI and admitedly it's not a spirited drive although it does pull nicely and does 0-60 in under 10 seconds. The Tekna spec has pretty much everything from heated leather seats to Xenons and Bluetooth, the roof is pretty much all glass so the interior feels very spacious. The trade off for the high ride height is a bit of roll in the corners but its not too bad and in cruises nicely on the motorway and will cost less for pretty much everything bar servicing. I like it but its no MINI.
