Try getting a vaguely open Bluetooth stack on to the App Store and you'll hit a brick wall - that's why it's gone to Cydia.
Yeah by "the phone" I meant its out of the box setup state and not what it's technically capable of.
So when you jailbreak one, you can connect to this Cydia (which Im assuming is a non-official app store) right? Can you still connect to the official app store as well?

Yes, you can use both. I get most of my apps from the official store but also pick up a few from Cydia. Occasionally you'll come across an 'official' app that complains about it being a jailbroken phone (Skype does this) but that is rare.

Jailbreakng an iPhone doesn't stop you from doing anything you can do on a standard phone

"they" can't detect that it's jailbroken?

So, other than warranty issues if you need to return a jailbroken phone, there are no drawbacks to jailbreaking?

Yes, "they" can. Often the first thing they'll try if you take a broken iPhone in is a restore - in which case bye bye jailbreak.

It is, however, a technical violation of the EULA, so take that for whatever it's worth.

So a restore would erase the jailbreak code itself and, as a consequence, all apps the handset didnt leave the factory with? IE you're left with a phone in the same state as it was when you took it out of the box?

No traces that it'd been jailbroken remaining after a restore?

Exactly

And chances are that if you get the phone in such a state that you can't restore it, neither can they. That's not to say it's totally risk free as there is always that chance, no natter how slim.

I'm sure I've read that the jailbreak process has now been reduced to a one click solution?

Pretty much. Most people use blackra1n. Plug the phone in to computer, run blackra1n, wait 30 seconds, job done

BUT.....there is a slight problem now. Since around October last year Apple changed the boot ROM on iPhones. This was a hardware change and there is currently no way around this problem. If you use blackra1n to JB it will be a "tethered" JB which means you have to us blackra1n EVERY time you re-boot the phone. Not a problem for some as they're by a computer most of the time. For me, it's a deal breaker and not something I could live with. I'm not prepared to be away for a weekend, have to restart my phone for whatever reason and then not be able to turn it back on again.

I'm in the same boat as Desmo. That wouldn't be acceptable for me either. I'm certainly glad I did my Jailbreak when I did.
