It's not even really that It disappointed me slightly because I've heard people telling me how much of an accurate representation it was of Oahu, when it isn't even close

I assumed it'd be at least reasonable, but it was never going to be accurate (the amount of data for that would be scary). Add to that the obviously generic buildings (no doubt repeated as often as possible). Put it this way - they certainly won't have done Google Street View on it.

Considering GTA4 is pretty damn close to the NY street layout, you'd think TD:U would be the same.

That depends how much of NY it covers, obviously. Manhattan at least is easy to map given that a lot of it follows the grid system.
Not justifying anything - maybe they really couldn't be bothered. |
