You IT geeks probably think I am a noob of all kinds and what I have done is the most simplestic of tasks but I am proud nonetheless.
Bascially we have been building 3 new sites. I have been testing and working on these. My new manager goes on holiday and sends me 3 emails to send to the 3 different DNS providers to switch the old sites over to the new sites. Simples right? Nope. Some of the details were wrong in his email. I then had to hunt down who the DNS providers were for the current sites and get the login details/get them changed. Not easy as they are being hosted with different people (some not in the original email). Then obviously I had to chase them all to get this done. Take down one of the old sites which was on a .net domain and make the new one live on the .com domain (both domains were with different providers). Then one of them wasn't able to go live because they didn't have a general email address. Fine I thought - speak to IT. No. They use an outsourced IT company (same company which hosts the website). Fine thats all set up. Then I was told none of them could go live without the quarterly maintenance costs being approved first. No one is coming back to me about this. Anyway, my Chairman who has been chasing me all week to get these live approved for them to go live. The companys currently don't know that they are live :/ have been trying to get hold of them to now avail. ANYWAY! Most of the week I haven't known wtf I have been doing but seem to have (almost) sorted it. First time in a long while I actually feel like I have achieved something. I have felt like Sherlock Holmes all week. Do we have a thread for achievements? If not post yours here BB x |

I can categorically say I am going to have to write this week off because I've achieved nothing. It has been most unproductive

My teaching of 8 year olds was awesome! I overheard a primary teacher whispering "this guy is really good" to a student teacher we have, whilst I was talking about supermassive blackholes and the discovery of helium to gawping kids.
It was only a little thing, but it gave me a confidence boost The primary school sent us a email praising the excellence of the physics department <adjusts tie> |

I managed to sweet talk the council into giving our project a card so we can take the kids swimming for free (the kids get to go, but it costs us £4 a pop) I smiled sweetly at the lady and we now have one. It might only save us a few quid a month but that money can be spent elsewhere.

I've been fighting with DKMS and linux all week, trying to get DKMS to automagically compile in kernel modules necessary to make ipset work.
Alongside that fighting with SuSE 10 SP1 to make it install on a server that is far too modern, and fighting weird code with nasty mysql queries in it. Fun fun fun.

I didn't achieve as much as I would have liked to.
Kept up with my To Do list just about and got a fair few articles and reviews written despite having some huge sleep problems for over a week now. I'd have liked to have got more done though. It's made next week a lot busier than I wanted.

I haven't achieved much per se but I'm feeling hugely positive and have lots to look forward to. Sold my pony today, that's a big weight gone from my shoulders. Been given a huge boost at work and will be running shift for the next 3 weeks, possibly more. Found a great place to live fingers crossed, had a lovely day with the girls and MtE at crufts today. In a good place
