Draytek

I'm in desperate need of a good router (stable wired and wireless). My netgear just fooked up whilst updating its firmware. I've heard lots of good stuff about draytek, are they work the price for stability?

Some say yes, personally I say no to Draytek as I've found them to be very good at writing a feature list and less good and making them all work.

Besides their habbit of listing non-existant features, what are they like?

Aslong as it:

Has to be reliable
Good wireless signal (have a hawking attennae on the nic)
Generally stable under load.

i've never had a problem with netgear *touches wood*. i'm not aware of anyone who's stand-out better...but i'm open to be enlightened.

I didn't say that the features weren't there - they just didn't work. Mind you, the last one I tried was a 2800v (or something) where the router reloaded without fail during every single VoIP call. It went in the bin.

i wouldn't say that they're consumer products though, are they? i know of cisco products but i was talking about stuff you'd have in your house.

Hope mine doesn't do that - haven't wired it in yet.

Yes, they do have a habit of including incomplete features and/or removing them at a later date and/or not documenting some of the newer features. Doesn't tend to happen with the core stuff very often (VoIP on a VoIP router is of course core).

My 2600G decided to start locking up without warning, and when I flashed it, it got into a nice reload cycle. I have to give their support credit though, as they perservered with the diagnostics and 12 days later I had working firmware. This was in July last year, and it's never reloaded of it's own accord since - not once. More likely I'll reset it myself because my ISP broke something.

I haven't tried the new 2800VG yet, but I will, and if it hiccups on a VoIP call, their support will hear about it.

I've got Cisco stuff in my house, so yeah, they're consumer products too just a bit more expensive than your average Netgear/Belkin/whatever. Cisco have recently launched a new range of routers aimed specifically at the SoHo market.

Well I think I'm going to pick up the Draytek 2910G next tuesday. If it's crap - lesson learnt, but hopefully it won't be.
