Insidious.

Made me really jump in a few places! Good fun horror romp!

Heh,

I was about to post about a zombie film I had watched... but realised it was the book I had just read!! My mind is too imaginative!

About to watch Children of Men after I have completed an application form... looking forward to an afternoon chill out

Thor

Chris Hemsworth
Natalie Portman

et al.

7/10

Coming of age film. Thor does a naughty thing, gets stripped of his powers and exiled to earth being told to grow up.

Good film, but not excellent, established the kind of character Thor is. Solid acting all round, reasonable quality script. However:
Spoiler Alert! - Highlight below to read!

Thor grew up too quickly. One minute he's the arrogant, vain, self confident little boy, the next he's had a couple of fights and all of a sudden he's selfless? The romance felt very strange, almost entirely unrealistic given his character when he arrived on earth. I'm sure that was meant to be the lynch pin of his personality change but the lack of depth made the whole thing improbable.

End Spoiler Alert!

As a way of establishing the characters, ready for The Avengers, I thought it was decent, worth watching. 3D was a waste of money, absolutely nothing added at all by it.

If you go to watch it be sure to stick all the way through to the very end of the credits (two distinct sequences of credits, one fancy and one normal) for a hint at a future film. Not sure if that's Thor 2 or The Avengers.

I am Number Four

Having barely paid any attention to the trailers I was expecting a rip roaring action romp short on plot and big on explosions. However what I got was Twilight with aliens instead of vampires (according to Mrs DL) which whilst moderately amusing was clearly not aimed at me. Still there were some big explosions, some fighting and some horrifically bad acting from the main actors so I was happy enough.

6/10 though I suspect most teenagers would give it 8/10

The Tourist:

Spy thriller about a case of mistaken identity/man-hunt intrigue sort of movie.

Johnny Depp plays well but now slightly stereotypical role as a slightly bumbling clueless character.

Angelina Jolie the cool and sassy heroine - again not much different to her character in Salt. Cold hearted and on a mission.

Paul Bettanny as the overzealous interpol cop.

Not much action, more of a story dialogue, with amusing moments, and lovely scenery of Venice. It wasn't a "gripping" story, but a very easy watch and enjoyable watch. Glad I watched it though - but the suspense wasn't as uncomfortable or stressful as it should have been.

Still deserves a good 7/10 in my opinion - worth a watch.

The Book of Eli

Had been told this wasn't up to much but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nowhere near as 'religiousy' as I was expecting, some awesome fight scenes, a decent twist, and Mila Kunis. Did not expect any of those things.

8/10

Crank: High Voltage

This is purposefully insanely bad. I can't believe none of the actors ever questioned the things they're doing in the film because it's so over the top. It occasionally cuts away to 8-bit computer game graphics, graphically styled interludes, a full-on Godzilla fight with people in suits and countless stupid ways of charging an electrically-powered heart. At one point Statham is sent flying through a windscreen into the road, slides along for about 100 feet and gets up to dust himself down. It's a weird mix of comic book violence and comically gruesome violence. We also get a glimpse of main character Chev as a kid on a Jeremy Kyle style show. Geri Halliwell plays his mum. In another scene Ron Jeremy and Jenna Haze appear as porn-star protestors campaigning for higher wages - that's the kind of film this is.

They obviously all had a blast making this, and kudos must go to Amy Smart for her role. Not many mainstream actresses would sign up for such a terrible idea for a sequel, spend half the film wearing nothing but duct tape, and pretty much re-enact the strangest scene from the first film a second time.

I want to hate it. I want to rate it with the lowest score possible, but I can't.

5/10 - just for pure ridiculousness.

Burke and Hare

On paper, this has to be a good film. Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Bill Bailey, Christopher Lee, Tim Curry, Ronnie Corbett, Reece Shearsmith, Tom Wilkinson... John Landis directing... and a story about a pair of graverobbers turned murderers in 19th century Edinburgh.

Now, I knew this had received fairly bad reviews, so I wasn't expecting much, and this film really delivered. Badness, that is. For some inexplicable reason, it's not funny. It's just rather boring. My wife fell asleep and I found myself reaching for the guitar. There are a few "Ha" moments that raise a smile, but no belly laughs at all. Personally I think it's the script that lets this down. The amusing moments are pretty much all visual gags, while the dialogue is relatively devoid of humour, making the film seem interminably long.

Shame really, and it goes to show that mixing up some pretty good ingredients do not always make a palatable dish.
