And I agree with divine. He was a shrewd businessman. Nothing more, nothing less. He sold communications devices to people. He kept coming out with new toys for people to pay an exorbitant amount for when the packaging wasn't even cold to the touch on their current useless toys. But people kept buying into the hype that the newest and greatest iPhone just HAD to be had the minute it hit the shelves. Steve Jobs was a remarkable master of marketing, but he was no Pope Benedict.

My thoughts are with his family. I know pretty much exactly what they're going through as I lost my mum to ovarian cancer at 58.

Who said he was Pope Benedict or a deity? Not me. As far as I am concerned he was dedicated to his work, yes, and he made millions. He also inspired millions, he created millions of jobs and really made people think differently and believe in their ideas. He has inspired a whole generation and I am sure we will reap the benefits of this in the future. That alone in a culture seemingly made up of vacuous wannabees, shagging sports stars, drugged up musicians, bent politicians and arrogant film stars ~ who appear to be the inspiration for a generation of 'look at me' idiots, MUST be worth celebrating and respecting the guy for, regardless of what people think of his products or marketing strategies.

Remember, I have used apple products since the early 90s so am not some rabid ipod fangirl (bear in mind a lot of the hero worship of apple comes from the huge amount of **** original apple fans took fron 'other' computer users for twenty odd years ~ I can personally vouch for that as a female in IT). He brought style and elegance to function and he made the world a brighter and nicer place for me, and allowed me top have a bit of individuality around my mundane, daily chores. He was also partly responsible for me hooking up with Leo (not directly

) & for those reasons I will mourn him immensely.

If you watch the graduation speech he wasn't just a businessman. To say that's all he was implies you have no idea of the man. He was a man who understood design, technology, the importance of being creative and pushing boundaries.

Without Steve there'd be no Adobe so no Photoshop so where would digital photography be today? Who knows what Pixar would have become without his investment, so no wonderful movies like Toy Story or Up. Where would MS have got its *ahem* inspiration from?

I don't think I've read anything in the past 24 hours that discussed Steve's ability to rake in millions from selling overpriced consumer products. That's not the man people remember.

From what has surfaced over the years, working for SJ in an R&D role was not a nice experience - lots of secrecy and lots of cloak and dagger (including planting false rumours to try to catch anyone tempted to let slip). I can understand why they'd want to prevent industrial espionage, but nonetheless it was clearly taken to extreme degrees (including bolting hardware to desks to prevent anyone even picking it up). Even external suppliers had to do it 'the Apple way, or not at all'.

Personal character assassination over, he clearly had a shrewd head for design and business, and the willingness to dare to do what others would not, and the turn-around from failing Dot-com relic to corporate heavyweight is nothing short of astounding.

It was pretty clear from the Keynote that something was up. Now we know what that something was. RIP Steve Jobs.

In fairness if the WBC were protesting against the way I'd lived my life then I'd almost take it as a validation of what I'd been doing, not quite the enemy of my enemy is my friend approach but generally speaking if I'm on the opposite side of the fence to them I'm probably not going too far wrong...
