Woman in Black 8/10

Really loved this. Definitely a 'see at the cinema' movie, the 'jumpy' bits are very cleverly done and often sort of staggered so you think it's over, but it isn't. Lots of 'corner of the eye' movement too. Don't think it will transfer as well to the small screen though, although it will still be atmospheric. Thought the ending was perfect.

Dan Radcliffe is ...well.. jury is still out, he seems to be a pretty good actor, but his facial expression is limited, and this role doesn't ask him to expand upon it so it's hard to tell.

Did keep thinking of spells he could cast to get out of tricky situations though

Anyway, a good way to spend an hour and half, if your idea of horror is less gore and more psychological, this is a Hammer movie, so suspend your disbelief and go and get frightened

In brief before I forget them all I ended up watching 4 films on the flight to San Fran.

Drive - I really quite enjoyed this, I wasn't sure what to expect given some of the comments in here but while it doesn't make a lot of sense in some ways it's quite an entertaining and stylish film.

The Hangover Part II - much the same as before so in that sense it's perfectly as expected, I found Zach Galifianakis' character to be even more annoying than last time. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again but I'm happy enough to have seen it so I've watched both.

Moneyball - a surprisingly good film, I'd heard a little bit about it as a film of the story where the general manager of the Oakland Athletics tried to revolutionise baseball and use statistics to select the best baseball players for a team rather than individual superstars. I'm not a huge fan of baseball, it's just not a sport that has ever held any particular appeal to me but you don't need to like baseball to appreciate the film. It's funny how some of the best sports films are about American sports which wouldn't seem all that promising initially.

Killer Elite - it's a Jason Statham film, there's not a huge amount else to say. If you like his films generally then you'll probably like this as well, if not then avoid it as it's along the same lines as all the rest.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - 2011

I was rather nervous about this adaptation as I really enjoyed the book and the Swedish film from a couple of years back. I must say that I really enjoyed this version, Daniel Craig does a good job as do the rest of the cast, the changes to the plot are minor and don't detract from the overall plot and the story moves along at a good pace.

The rape scene is rather uncomfortable to watch (Miss DL left the room) but then it's not supposed to be nice, you may want to fast forward through it.

Tin Tin - 2011

The computer rendering in this film is simply fantastic and it's very easy to forget that you are not watching real actors, the plot is rather basic for an adult but good fun. Well worth a watch.

Hugo: 8.5/10

Really enjoyed this. Very good atmosphere, similar in some ways to Amelie, not least that it's French. Could have had a bit more Jude Law in it for a .5 increase

Ben Kingsley is a fabulous actor, and his eyes are so expressive. I wasn't sure about this film for the first hour or so having heard massively good things about it, but based on the latter half, I upped my mark from hovering around a 6 to an 8.5.

Didn't really like the Sasha Baron Cohen character though, seemed out of place. When I saw Johnny Depp was one of the producers, I realised where that came from.

The Hunger Games 10/10

One of the best films I've seen for a long time. Loved the styling, the concept, the way the film was split into before/during and thought it was perfectly done. Not particularly 'teenage' as you might expect, certainly a lot more grown up than the Twilight movies which I think are aimed at the same age group. Loved the way they showed the production of the event being done, reminded me of a kinda MASSIVE version of big brother. Excellent acting and characters, and at 2.25, I didn't even check my watch once to see what time it was (how I measure how engrossing a film is

Same here really, the film could do with another 30 mins to flesh out the marines role as well as some background on the agency / other characters. The format was very much "here is a marine", "here is a CO", here is the situation ..... off you go!

Interesting concept which I am sure I have seen something very similar to recently. At 90mins it was too short. Given another 30 mins to flesh the situation and story out I think it would have been great.

Hmmm 6/10. Predictable, but the lack of development of characters really holds the film back. With the short running time you are never quite given time to get into the film.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec

I'm not quite sure how to describe the feel of this film...... a french sort of cross between 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' and 'The Mummy' with a bit of steam punk and ripping yarns thrown in. It seems very marmite from all the reviews I have seen, but I really liked it. If there is ever a sequel I'll be watching it for sure.

8/10 I watched this with a couple of friends and they both enjoyed it despite neither being much of a fan of Takashi Miike or films set in feudal Japan - that said there were a few questions about what was going on. It's violent and flashy as with all his films but there's also moments of levity and even occasional subtlety. I hadn't heard much about it before watching but it's definitely worth the time if you've got even a passing interest in either of the things in the first sentence.

7/10 Rather violent film with some pretty good acting about a couple of petty criminals who bite off rather more than they can chew by abducting the surrogate mother for a rather more serious criminal. If you dislike Sarah Silverman as much as I do then you may also enjoy it but then you could switch off after five minutes.

8/10 For the most part very entertaining story of two brothers who are estranged from each other and their alcoholic father but their worlds end up coming together again when they fight for an MMA tournament with the biggest purse in the history of the sport. It's well told but at the end it just feels like the writer got bored as the ending leaves so much left unexplained, there's almost no tie-up which isn't always a bad thing but here it felt less like a plot device than laziness.

6/10 If you've liked the rest then you'll probably like this one, impressively enough they've managed to shoehorn in most of the cast from the previous four pictures.
