Networking things

We're getting NTL on Thursday, which I believe involves having an NTL modem. We have 2 computers. Can we plug the two into this modem, or could we get a router?

I know NOTHING about networking, so any help would be greatfully appreciated. Not keen on the idea of having one machine as the server running all the time because of electricity costs and the annoyance of having a machine humming away in the corner all the time.

Given the (lack of) cost involved and your stated requirements, your best bet would be to get a router. Make sure to get a cable-compatible router and not an ADSL version. I'm not the most up-to-date regarding the best models, so hopefully someone else can complete that part.

How do those NTL modem boxes work? DHCP? If so could they not just get a switch? If not then as Mark says just get a Router (they often have numerous LAN ports) and you can all be connected up. If you want to go wireless that's also a possibility.

I'll come and help you do it for free... or maybe just a cup of tea... Or a bit of a grope... or....

I have a spare one here which does wireless and CAT5 and a PCI network card you can have.

It came free from Blueyonder so it does cable

We're on NTHell, yes you do get a modem and we have the modem going into a router to run the two PCs

You get one IP address per connection, assigned (usually) based on the MAC address of the cable modem. So you'll need something to do NAT and allow that single IP address to be shared - hence the need for a router.

Of course, if people are offering them for free, so much the better.

I have a network card because we were on a router at my parents house, but I'm not sure whether Leon does. Thank you very much for the offer

. Will the router work with the NTL modem? No idea how this thing works. I assume we plug it into the modem and it just keeps it all online all the time so we can just turn on our computers and be instantly connected.... sorry if this is completely wrong

Nope, that's spot on. Just leave the modem and the router on (well, if you want to), and they will be ready to go when you turn a PC on.
