I would really drop Badass an email. He is the man on monitors.

Widescreens are damn handy, I have a 19" 4:3 next to my dell widescreen and there is quite a difference. The main thing lost will be vertical height of the screen, the 19" WS will not be as tall as your 4:3 17's.

Check that the monitor that you were looking at does do 1:1 mapping. Not many of the cheaper ones actually do it.
