carpet cleaning/refreshing tips?

Right, my carpet is beginning to look a bit scabby and horrible and I need to clean it up a bit and put some life back into it.

it's mostly horrible around my sofa where my feet are as I haven't got a rug or anything there.

Does anyone have any tips on how to clean a carpet without one of those vax machines, are there any detergents that you can just scrub in and brush the crap out?

or would I be better off renting a carpet cleaner for a weekend and blitzing the entire living room?
