Knackered car - Gears related

Car was screwed this morning. It won't go into either reverse or 1st gear.

I've booked it into the garage tomorrow but got 2 questions

1) is it OK to start in second gear and pull into the garage (it's only about 200 meters away)

2) What the **** causes that? Any idea on cost?

Luckily my flatmate is on holiday so I can nick his car for a few days
