CHDK firmware for Canon PowerShot

I'm considering the possibility of putting the CHDK firmware on my S3 so I can get some more life out of it, and maybe do a few extra things I couldn't do before (like shoot RAW).

Does anyone have an experience with this firmware? How much does it get in the way? Most of the time I just want to use my camera how I've always used it, but I want to have the extra features available when I need them (I realise I'll have to learn how to use them of course, which will be a challenge in itself given how many there are).
