A neat little trick I just found.

Download Prowl for the iPhone. There is then a client to install on the Mac. It basically creates a new "Display" in Growl called Prowl. You can then use any app which works with Growl (Basically everything) to send certain events to that display, which sends it as an instant push notification to your iPhone.

OmniFocus is a good example of this as you can get it to alert you when any of your tasks are due. It works with anything though. Transmit when an big upload is complete, Adium when certain contacts sign in.
