Product code for Microsoft works

New laptop has the basic version of Microsoft works on it, but when I go to type in the product code (which I get from the bottom of the laptop) it says its incorrect. Thing is I got the laptop from Play.com, so who do I ask about what to do?

I can't afford a full version of Microsoft office, but I do kind of need it to do stuff on this laptop.

Windows 7 if that makes a difference.
