Well it seems that in addition to the units that refuse to download the new firmware there are also a load of them where the messaging functionality doesn't work. Not a feature I'd ever really use and it is a software fix that will come out eventually so I'm not going to bother taking this unit back. Set it up in the kitchen last night and Mrs DL loves the Internet Radio and said that as she could listen to music she'd be cooking a lot more often. Result!
