It definitely used to be the case that you'd pay a hefty premium for an iPhone compared to Android handsets but lately this seems to have changed with the latest top-end Android phones commanding much the same price.
If you are going to go with an iPhone then I'd definitely wait at this point as the next model is only around three to four months away. As for contracts, I personally don't like long ones but, if a 24-month contract works out best for you and you're happy to be tied to the network for that long then I don't see a problem with it. I personally prefer to pay more for a shorter contract and am on a 12-month one on my 4S. Do you know anyone who works for one of the networks? You can often get a discount through them if so. I've got a 30% discount on my Voda contract via a friend which means my 4S works out at a total cost over the 12-month term of £562.
