They were a pop phenomenon, some of their music is timeless and classic, some is cheesy tosh but they changed the way music was viewed to a large degree. Hell they even had 'Beatlemania', films, dolls, people idolised them etc etc so if that doesn't suggest that there was something a bit special about them then I'm not sure what does. You don't have to like the music but I'd be surprised if most people didn't at least acknowledge they were fairly competent at what they did. They also had some pretty fantastic quotes such as (on being asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the World): "..Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles.." or "We're bigger than Jesus". Quotes might not be exact but they are just from memory.
