ubuntu gone crazy

you'll have to bare with of as I'm posting from my phone.

tried to start the laptop this morning but it's not working. it starts to boot normally but then stops at /etc/rc.local fail. the screen them flashes 3 times and I end up in a place to set up my graphics card as I'm in low graphics mode. once I set tgat it still drops back to 800 x 600 and them loads the desktop. my mouse pad doesn't york so I have to use a usb mouse. wireless network doesn't work either. not sure where to in from here. seems like I need to reconfigure all my hardware.
