Are you seriously suggesting that you would turn off the lighting ring to change a bulb if you weren't sure if the switch was on or not?

Hold the bulb by the glass and push it into the bayonet. If it lights up you can either be quick and get it in before the bulb gets too hot to hold or go and invert the switch. Simple.
