Default Samsung Pixon

Mine arrived today in a shiny box of understated win.

The phone itself is roughly the same dimensions as an iPhone but slightly thicker. Feels *much* larger in the hand than the iPhone which is actually comforting - my iPhone 3G-owning housemate liked how it felt in the hand compared to his, although in a trouser pocket the iPhone is much more stealthy.

Its a good 2mm thinner than my old K800i at its thickest point though, which is quite nice. Weight isn't too bad at about 110g, feels about the same as the iPhone and only a bit heavier than the k800i.

Turning it on, first impressions are that the screen is very nice, the touch is responsive and the nice touch of slightly vibrating when you hit a button is a nice touch to aid with tactile feedback. Scrolling with the touch rather than the buttons on the side takes a little bit of learning - too eager a flick and it thinks you are tapping the screen so you need to be a bit more cautious until you get the hang of what it wants from you. The menuing system is very intuitive, there is no stupidity like on the earlier TouchWiz versions.

At first it felt a little slow and clunky which I initially put down to the fact it was running Java but after a while of use it runs smoothly when doing 99% of tasks - exiting Google Maps brings the phone to a standstill for a little while which is slightly irritating but liveable.

The camera is the real party piece though, at 8 megapixels its right at the top of the class at the moment. For a camera phone, it really is exceptionally impressive - focus is fast and accurate and features face detection and anti-shake stuff which is a bonus for drunken photos. The flash isnt a proper flash which is a shame but it seems fairly adequate. It will also shoot DVD-res video at 120fps which is kinda cool. It'll even GPS-tag your shots and if you so choose, facebook-style tag the people in your photos so you can bring up all the photos you have of a certain person or place or whatever.

Can't comment on battery life but I'm expecting it to be around a full day, perhaps a bit less with monster usage.

The only real con so far is the lack of wi-fi, but that really doesn't bother me one iota as I dont think I would ever use it.

Gets a thumbs-up from me anyway, and I am one of the fussiest phone people I have ever come across
